“We are very grateful to Icelantic for all their support with the transformation of the King’s Theatre. They designed and implemented the network infrastructure for the King’s as part of its major redevelopment project. This scope included the provision of switching capacity and Wi-Fi coverage to supporting corporate operations, EPOS systems, and public access networks.” – Capital Theatres

Overview

A historic theatre deserves a network worthy of centre stage

When the King’s Theatre embarked on an ambitious refurbishment programme, the investment wasn’t just about restoring a historic venue. It was about creating an exceptional experience for audiences, performers and staff alike, combining the character of a treasured cultural landmark with the technology expected of a modern performance space.

Behind the scenes, however, the existing network infrastructure was beginning to show its age; the network no longer reflected the aspirations of a venue investing heavily in its future.

The theatre needed a modern network capable of supporting everything from front-of-house ticketing and hospitality to production teams, administration and guest Wi-Fi. Most importantly, it needed to operate without interrupting rehearsals, performances or the thousands of visitors passing through its doors each week.

That’s where Icelantic stepped in.

The Challenge

Replacing the core network of any busy organisation presents its own challenges.

Every switch, wireless access point and firewall formed part of a business-critical environment supporting live productions, payment systems, telephony, ticketing and day-to-day operations.

Failure wasn’t an option. Every installation window had to be meticulously planned, every device pre-configured, and every service verified before audiences arrived.

As part of the wider refurbishment project, the technology infrastructure needed to match the ambition of the venue itself. The goal wasn’t simply to replace ageing hardware. It was to provide a best-in-class network that would underpin the King’s Theatre’s operations for years to come.

Our Approach

Preparation became the key to success.

Our engineering team carried out a comprehensive on-site survey, producing detailed network maps that identified every device, connection and dependency across the venue. This allowed the entire deployment to be carefully sequenced long before any equipment arrived on site. Working closely with multiple third-parties on a complex and challenging site, the work was to be completed in accordance with stringent health and safety requirements.

A new network was designed to provide greater performance and scalability, supporting both the theatre’s current requirements and future growth.

Working ahead of rehearsals and live performances, engineers deployed the new infrastructure in carefully coordinated phases, replacing critical hardware while maintaining continuity for the venue’s day-to-day operations.

Once installed, every business-critical service was thoroughly tested, including ticketing systems, payment terminals, telephony, staff workstations and wireless connectivity, ensuring the entire venue was fully operational before each phase was signed off.

The Outcome

The theatre now benefits from a modern network providing faster, more reliable connectivity across the entire site. Staff have a robust platform to support day-to-day operations, visitors enjoy improved wireless services, and the venue has the infrastructure required to support future technology initiatives.

Most importantly, the network now reflects the standard of the venue itself.

A building with decades of cultural history deserves technology that enables its next chapter. By delivering a resilient, future-ready infrastructure as part of the King’s Theatre’s wider refurbishment, Icelantic helped ensure this iconic venue can continue delivering exceptional experiences both on stage and behind the scenes for many years to come.

Conclusion

Successful infrastructure projects are measured by more than the technology installed. They are measured by how seamlessly the organisation continues operating throughout the transition.

For organisations where downtime simply is not an option, careful planning, technical expertise, and meticulous execution make all the difference.

And, most importantly, enjoy the show!
