For law firms, time is billable, deadlines are immovable, and client confidentiality is critical. When connectivity becomes unreliable, the impact is immediate: systems lag and productivity suffers.
As part of our commitment to proactive service, we proposed and undertook a review with our client, Campbell Smith, to assess the strength of their current network. Having flagged Wi-Fi issues and a comms cabinet in need of some new life; a refresh of the equipment, although valuable, would not be as effective without upgrading the underlying cabling infrastructure, and as such the decision was made to undertake the full project to support their business needs, both now and into the future.
As their IT managed services provider, we undertook a full assessment, redesign, and implementation of the structured cabling solution. The result was a significant improvement in network speed, reliability, and overall operational efficiency.
The Challenge
In addition to the performance issues being experienced day to day, our assessment highlighted several underlying risks within the client’s IT environment that required our attention.
The firm was operating on ageing network equipment that was approaching the end of its lifespan, creating a real risk of unplanned downtime. Within the comms cabinet, organisation and cable management had led to a cluttered and congested setup, increasing the likelihood of overheating, accidental disconnections, and physical cable damage.
This setup made remote troubleshooting unnecessarily complex and time-consuming, limiting the ability to quickly diagnose and resolve issues when they arose.
At floor level, the availability of reliable data points was inconsistent. Many existing connections relied on outdated cabling, making it difficult for staff to establish stable wired ethernet connections where required.
Taken together, these issues not only impacted performance but introduced avoidable operational and resilience risks for the business.
Our Approach
We began with a comprehensive review of the network. This included inspecting existing cabling routes, analysing network performance under load, and carrying out Wi-Fi heat mapping to understand how coverage aligned with how the office was actually used.
Rather than applying incremental fixes, we recommended a full redesign centred on structured data cabling. The goal was not simply to resolve current issues, but to create a stable, scalable foundation that would support the firm’s growth.
Security and performance were also key considerations. The network was segmented to prioritise critical systems such as case management and VoIP, ensuring that essential services remained stable even during peak demand.
Implementation
Given the nature of the firm’s work, minimising disruption was essential. Legal teams could not afford extended downtime, particularly during working hours.
We therefore delivered the project in carefully planned phases, scheduling more intrusive work outside of core business hours where necessary. Legacy cabling was removed, new structured cabling installed, and all data points were tested and certified to ensure performance and compliance.
Throughout the process, the firm remained operational. From the perspective of end users, the transition was seamless.
The Outcome
The difference in performance was immediate and noticeable across the firm. Systems that had previously lagged became responsive, large document transfers completed without delay, and connectivity issues during calls and meetings were effectively eliminated.
Wi-Fi coverage became consistent across the entire office, including areas that had previously been problematic. This had a direct impact on client interactions, particularly for teams relying on video conferencing and VoIP communication.
Perhaps most importantly, the firm now has an infrastructure that supports its future ambitions. As data volumes grow and reliance on cloud platforms increases, the network is no longer a limiting factor.
Conclusion
By investing in structured data cabling and a properly designed network environment, Campbell Smith has moved from reactive problem-solving to a position of stability and confidence. Their infrastructure now supports the speed, reliability, and security that modern legal practice demands.
For firms operating in similarly demanding environments, the lesson is clear: reliable connectivity is not just an IT concern, it is a critical to client service, productivity, and growth.
